Sedation DentistryIn Lafayette
We get it — going to the dentist isn’t always easy for children. Many kids have a hard time sitting still, which can make dental care difficult. Others may be anxious or scared about visiting the dentist. With our sedation options, your child can feel totally comfortable and relaxed during their treatment. It’s just one of the many ways we make each visit a positive experience.

Why should I get Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry offers a gentle, safe, and effective solution for children who are anxious or fearful about visiting the dentist. At Pediatric Dental Specialists of Lafayette, Dr. Seth DeJean understands that every child is different—and that some kids need a little extra support to feel calm and comfortable during their appointment. Whether it’s the sound of the tools, fear of the unknown, or simply sensory overload, sedation helps ease nerves so your child can receive the care they need without stress.
More importantly, our approach to sedation is built around safety and teamwork. Every sedation case—outside of nitrous oxide—is managed alongside a licensed anesthesia professional. This allows Dr. DeJean to focus solely on your child’s dental treatment while your child is carefully monitored throughout the entire procedure.

The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Helps Anxious Kids Get the Care They Need
For many children, dental anxiety is very real. Sedation helps reduce that fear, making the visit feel easier and more manageable. Whether your child is nervous about unfamiliar sights and sounds or has had a tough dental experience in the past, sedation creates a calming environment where they feel more in control and less overwhelmed.
Allows Treatment to Be Completed Safely and Quickly
When a child is relaxed, we’re able to complete treatment more efficiently and with greater ease—for both the patient and the provider. In some cases, a longer or more involved treatment that might take several visits can be done in one safe appointment. This reduces the number of times your child has to return for care and often improves their experience long term.
A Team-Based Approach for Maximum Safety
Safety is our top priority. That’s why Dr. DeJean partners with board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists or certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) for every oral or IV sedation case. Your child is never left unattended, and their vitals are monitored continuously so that parents can feel confident their child is in excellent hands.

The Sedation Dentistry Process

Initial Visit and Behavioral Indicators
Before any sedation is recommended, we get to know your child. Dr. DeJean personally greets every patient, and our team uses a “tell-show-do” method to walk them through what to expect. We’ll observe how your child handles the exam and X-rays, which helps us determine whether sedation is needed and, if so, which type is most appropriate.
Choosing the Right Sedation Option
We offer three types of sedation based on your child’s needs. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a mild option that wears off quickly. Oral sedation provides deeper relaxation and is paired with professional monitoring. IV sedation, administered by a pediatric anesthesiologist, is ideal for more extensive procedures or high-anxiety patients. We’ll talk through each option so you know exactly what to expect.
Monitored, Child-Friendly Care
During treatment, your child’s safety and comfort remain our focus. Dr. DeJean performs the procedure while the anesthesia provider carefully monitors your child. This division of responsibility allows us to deliver care that’s not only effective but as gentle and reassuring as possible, for both you and your child.
